A great example of the work of the very talented Magaly Fuentes and her husband Jose Calvo. Magaly is part of the world renowned Fuentes Family, including Epifanio Fuentes, Zeny Fuentes, Julia Fuentes, Efrain Fuentes and Jose Fuentes. In my opinion however, Magaly has surpassed her famous father and brothers in her talent in the painting of these wood carvings. Her shading technique is similar to her sister Julia's, yet retains her own signature style. She too elevates the art form to more of a fine art approach, while maintaining the beautiful whimsy that one finds in Mexican Folk Art. You can definitely see the trademark style of her family in her work still, and it is fantastic seeing another family member keeping these traditions alive.

I love these coiled tail iguana lizards - truly Museum Quality! The painting technique on this iguana is stunning, and the colors used are smart and simply gorgeous! These iguanas are carved out of the traditional Copal wood, a soft wood indigenous to Oaxaca and the neighboring state of Puebla. The curvature in the tail is absolutely stunning! So complex and so full of that difficult to achieve sense of movement. And the claws and feet are definitely cool! This lizard has all of the hallmarks of a museum quality piece. The piece has been signed by both Magaly and Jose... a truly delightful young couple, and two of the rising stars of San Martin Tilcajete, Oaxaca! There are no removable parts.
