This cool dog with his tongue wagging carving was created by Juventino Melchor of the well known Melchor Family of woodcarvers from San Martin Tilcajete in Oaxaca. Juventino carves whimsical figures out of the traditional Copal wood that is indigenous to the area, and is well known for his animal and musical animal figures. Painted in bright and cheerful colors, these figures are stand outs both for quality and for their affordability. I love this piece for how bright and cheerful the colors are, as well as the spectacular carving itself that is full of a wonderful sense of movement with the upright at attention stance and the curved tail. But my favorite part of this carving has got to be the addition of the tongue hanging out of the side of it's mouth! So whimsical and creative! The quality of this carving is amazing, with such a sense of movement and character, yet carved out of one single piece of wood. The piece has been signed on the bottom by the artist, and there are no removable parts. An excellent carving indeed! Just gorgeous!
