Julia is part of the world renowned Fuentes Family, including Epifanio Fuentes, Zeny Fuentes, Ivan Fuentes and Efrain Fuentes, as well as sisters Magaly Fuentes and Rubi Fuentes. Julia Fuentes actually used to do the painting on her brother Zeny's pieces, until branching out on her own several years ago. In my opinion however, Julia has surpassed her brothers in her talent in the painting of these wood carvings. Considering that she actually studied art at Bellas Artes... a famous institution in Mexico City! Wow! We were amazed at the beauty of her pieces when we first saw them, and are so excited to be able to share them with the world. The shading technique that she uses in her artistry is just amazing. One of the most incredible aspects of her work is that she has managed to elevate the art form to more of a fine art approach, while maintaining the beautiful whimsy that one finds in Mexican Folk Art. You can definitely see the trademark style of her family in her work still, and it is fantastic seeing another family member keeping these traditions alive.
This large horse is amazingly detailed and done to absolute museum quality! We have been so tempted to keep this one for our own collection! The shading on this is expertly done, in beautiful dark earthy tones. It gradually melds from one shade of brown into another, and features pops of bright color in the intricate design pattern. And I love how Julia has included a medallion on the back of the horse, done in tribute to the hallmark style of her famous family. There is such lovely precision in the painting of this piece, The piece is also full of a sense of movement, which add to the visual excitement of the piece. The upright positioning and curvature of the head, as well as the intricate positioning of the legs, gives the feel that this horse is at full attention and ready to trot away at any moment. Full of life and beauty! The tail is the only removable part, and the piece has been signed by both Jose Juan and Julia... a truly delightful young couple!
