This large one piece museum quality rhinoceros wood carving is absolutely amazing! A stand out piece carved of the traditional Copal wood. There is such a fantastic sense of movement and even adventure packed into this carving! This earthy brown rhino with bright pops of color is a great example of the work of the very talented Julia Fuentes and her husband Jose Juan. Julia is part of the world renowned Fuentes Family, including Epifanio Fuentes, Zeny Fuentes, Ivan Fuentes and Efrain Fuentes, as well as sisters Magaly Fuentes and Rubi Fuentes. Julia Fuentes actually used to do the painting on her dad and her brother Zeny's pieces, until branching out on her own a few years ago. In my opinion, Julia has surpassed her brothers in her talent in the painting of these wood carvings. Julia actually studied at Bellas Artes... a famous art institution in Mexico! Wow! We were amazed at the beauty of her pieces when we first saw them, and are so excited to be able to share them with the world. They never disappoint, and always seem to increase in beauty and detail. The shading technique that she uses in her artistry is just amazing. One of the most incredible aspects of her work is that she has managed to elevate the art form to more of a fine art approach, while maintaining the beautiful whimsy that one finds in Mexican Folk Art. You can definitely see the trademark style of her family in her work still, and it is fantastic seeing another family member keeping these traditions alive.
This incredibly beautiful carving contains such a masterful degree of intricacy. The shading is earthy and mouth dropping gorgeous, and the precision in the painting is eye catching! Pieces of this large and solid size are harder and harder to come by these days, as the Copal wood supply continues to be regulated by the Mexican government. It begs to be noticed, as it is such a unique subject matter! Definitely one of a kind. And the carving contains the perfect sense of movement that is a hallmark of quality.. the twisted position of the body, the curved tail, and the upright horns give this rhino carving the sense that it is about to charge off into the distance. There are no removable parts, and the carving has been signed by both Jose Juan and Julia... a truly delightful young couple!
