Jesus Sosa Calvo is one of our favorite people in Oaxaca.. a great carver who works hard to produce his own carvings, while many others have resorted to buying carvings made by others. Jesus works side by side with his wife and children to produce all of their woodcarvings - some of the most whimsical and colorful to be found! They are just a lovely family! Interestingly enough though, Jesus actually did not start as a carver. He was an electrician when he became ill with typhoid fever. Being from the traditional carving village of San Martin Tilcajete, he decided to try his hand at wood carving, after much insistence from his wife Juana. One day he was at the doctors office, and started reading the medical journals. He became fascinated with the amoebas that he saw in one publication, and decided to use that as his signature pattern. The pattern takes on a look similar to jelly beans.. bright, colorful and full of good cheer! Although not painted in the style that first inspired Jesus, this cat is simply beautiful! It is masterfully carved from one solid piece of copal wood, and the tail is the only removable part! Cats are definitely the signature carving for Jesus. His polk a dot cats became famous in a book written about Oaxacan wood carvings. We love the uniqueness in the positioning of this cat though with it's sweeping tail, and the use of his cheerful amoeba pattern in the design. Tall, with a long neck, with the most adorable and cheerful face ever. This one is a keeper! The piece is signed by the artist, and there are no removable parts.
