Such a fantastic giraffe wood carving! The artist is Jesus Melchor, son of one of the original master carvers Coindo Melchor (recently deceased). A true artist in his own right, Jesus Melchor carves each of his own pieces from the traditional Copal wood. His wife Maura Ramos then paints each piece by hand.
We love a good giraffe carving, and this one is so unique and really sweet. It is fantastic seeing Jesus carve his wonderful giraffe carvings once again. Such an unusual subject to see in Oaxacan wood carvings, and fill with a terrific spirit of fun. There is a great sense of movement, which is rare to find in such an economical piece, with the stretched neck and the placement of the legs. The face is adorable and tender, and the painting is done with great care. The ears, horns and tail are removable for safe shipping, and the piece is signed by the artist.
