One of our favorite trips on our travels in Oaxaca is to the village of San Pedro Cajonos! Situated high in the mountains three hours from Oaxaca City, this is one of the most idyllic settings that one may ever find! Perched at the top of the mountains, with sweeping views of the surrounding canyons and distant pueblos, San Pedro Cajonos kisses the clouds and shines in its art forms. One of the most famous of San Pedro Cajonos artists, is the Blas Family of wood carvers. Their style is so unique, and can be identified readily upon sight. Bright colors, and fine painting are their hallmarks. I absolutely love the Blas Family wood carvings!
Hilario's long tailed armadillo wood carvings are fantastic! Full of whimsy and fun, and bright and deep colors in the painting. For such an economical piece, these armadillos are packed with detail, a detail that is nice to see in an economical carving. Hilario has carved in ridges to the shell, to provide for a beautiful textural and visual quality to the piece. And the painting is really nicely done. The piece is signed by the artist, and the tail is removable for safe shipping.
