We just love the bright pops of color and the whimsy of this rooster, with it's gorgeous floral design! This wood carving was hand painted by Claudia Jimenez, the daughter of the world renowned Candido Jimenez, and the niece of Maria Jimenez. As young artist who grew up surrounded by the art work of her family, Claudia favors the painting style created by her aunt. Maria Jimenez works closely with her brothers Candido, Aaron, Miguel and Alberto to produce some of the highest quality carvings in the village of San Martin Tilcajete. Maria started off practicing embroidery, while her brothers followed the traditional path of wood carving. When her oldest brother Aaron, who carved and painted his own figures, had trouble selling his pieces commercially, Maria stepped in and began painting the figures for her brother. She borrowed her designs from the intricate embroidery patterns that she used, and her brother's business quickly became successful. Nowadays, she signs the pieces that she paints, and her brothers sign the pieces that they (or their wives) paint. Now we have a second generation in the family to carry on these incredible traditions! This is so exciting, as it gives hope that these traditions, as well as this beautiful family style, will live on in the future. The family pieces have an elegance that stands out in the village.

We just love the colorful floral pattern, combined with the feather pattern, on this little rooster! It has all the qualities of whimsy and color that we love in Mexican Folk Art. The hand painted flowers are gorgeous, and painted to museum quality by a young artist! Claudia has even won an award for her work through the Friends of Oaxacan Folk Art's annual juried art competition for young artists under 30 years of age! There are no removable parts, and the piece has been signed by the artist.
