Incredible Giraffe Wood Carving... full of whimsy and creativity! This giraffe wood carving was hand carved and hand painted by the very talented Candido Jimenez. Candido is one of the brothers of Maria Jimenez. Together with their brothers, Aaron, Miguel and Alberto, they produce some of the highest quality carvings in the village of San Martin Tilcajete. Maria started off practicing embroidery, while her brothers followed the traditional path of wood carving. When her oldest brother Aaron, who carved and painted his own figures, had trouble selling his pieces commercially, Maria stepped in and began painting the figures for her brother. She borrowed her designs from the intricate embroidery patterns that she used, and her brother's business quickly became successful. The family pieces have an elegance that stands out in the village.
This giraffe is definitely no exception. We just love the the lizard or salamander pattern that appears to wiggle all across the surface, the long legs, the adorable face, the curvature of the neck, the cactus fiber mane and the tail crafted of thread. It has all the qualities of whimsy and color that we love in Mexican Folk Art. The ossicones and ears are removable for safe shipping, and the piece has been signed by the artist.
