Saul Silveira is one of Lila Silveira's brothers, and you can see her influence in his traditional designs. We love the traditional painted designs on this beautiful, yet affordable pottery. We still can't get over the fact that Mata Ortiz pots are painted with hand made paint brushes crafted of long strands of human hair. Then combine that effort with the fact that the artist dig their own clay from the surrounding area, refine the clay, hand build the pottery without a potter's wheel, make their own paint out of minerals, and often fire in the traditional manner on the ground without a modern kiln.. wow! Saul Silveira is known for the actual hand burnishing or polishing of the pottery with an agate stone. He often gives lessons in burnishing to the other potters in the village. A fun thing to note with Saul is that of the entire Silveira Family, Saul is the only one to sign his name with a B instead of a V, as Silbeira. Since we are good friends, we jokingly asked Saul if he was sure that he had the same Mom, and responded that his birth certificate actually spells his name that way... but it does list his Mom and Dad at least! I love this matte black clay, that appears closer to being a deep chocolate brown color. It has been perfectly accented with natural white paint. And I love the squared lip of this piece. It adds a unique touch to the pot. A great affordable piece, and it is signed by the artist. We also always provide a free pottery ring with each purchase of a Mata Ortiz pot.
