Paty Ortiz is an award winning artist whose signature work is done in a gorgeous mixture of brown and white clay with a rabbit motif. The rabbit pattern is similar to the rabbits design that is her cousin Macario Ortiz's trademark, and she has won multiple awards for her work, yet her work remains more affordable. Paty hails from the Barrio Porvenir section of Mata Ortiz, and is a respected potter who focuses on quality and craftsmanship. Her expertise at the combination of different colors of clay is evident, yet it remains a skill that few other potters even attempt. The mixture of clay adds another degree of labor and difficulty to the piece, since pancakes of both types of clay are first crafted, then cut into cubes and combined over and over until just the right balance is achieved in the mixture. The mixture of clay can also make the traditional firing a little more risky and complicated, as different types of clay tend to fire at different speeds. Just the right combination is required.
This large piece features her traditional rabbit design, but is an unusual three sided deign incorporating more animal themes, as well as beautiful geometric accents. One side features a gorgeous assortment of rabbits surrounding a lizard, the second side features a cool serpent design, and the third side features birds with fish and turtles. A spectacular piece full o f beautiful designs done on a mixed clay pot base. This piece is signed by the artist.
