Octavio Silveira Jr. is the son of the world famous Tavo Silveira and Myrna Hernandez, and a third generation potter! This young potter is sure to be the next wave in talent coming out of Mata Ortiz! We love watching these traditions passed down within a family, and the family working side by side on a daily basis. Octavio already has that critical artistic eye that his parents have. His designs are crisp and clean, and his line work is amazing for an artist who is barely in his twenties.
This unusual and modern seahorse and fish pot is done in the sgraffito technique, where layers of paint are built up and then the surface is etched to reveal the color of the clay below and form the fine details of the design. I love how Octavio has the confidence not usually seen in a young artist to leave this pot simple and clean, yet a lot of painstaking detail in the etching. With the natural red paint and the black seahorse and fish, it really makes the piece pop and take on a modern feel against the white textured clay. The bubbles coming from both the fish and the seahorse add the perfect cheerful touch of whimsy. And I love the egg shape of the pot. The piece is signed by the artist, and a pottery display ring will be included at no additional cost.
