Jose Martinez is a well known Master Potter, and the husband of Susy Martinez. Jose and Susy are arguably some of the most talented potters today working consistently in the black on black style! Their pots have great visual appeal, and an amazing textural feel. The inside walls of this pot also demonstrate fine craftsmanship, as they are smooth and thin.. a miracle considering that these pots are hand formed from a coil of clay, without the use of a potter's wheel, painted with long strands of human hair and then fired in a home made kiln that simply consists of wood and a steel bucket that is placed over the pottery. No oxygen is allowed to enter during the firing, and the smoke that is achieved is what turns the pottery black. The artist can use any color of clay to achieve this end result. Dried cow dung or sawdust is added to the inside of the homemade kiln to assist in the production of smoke that will turn the piece black. But we love how the family takes an additional step to add to the texture and beauty of their pieces, by sometimes carving the sides of the piece, such as in this beautiful small piece by Jose Martinez. We love it! And we also love how they have passed down their traditions to their two children, both award winning artists on a Mexican National Awards level! The piece is signed by the artist, and we always provide a pottery ring with each Mata Ortiz pot, free of charge.
