Jesus Hernandez is the brother of the more well known pottery sisters Mirna, Norma and Martha Hernandez. Unlike his sisters, Jesus is more of a hidden talent among the potters of Mata Ortiz, so his pottery continues to be very affordable, yet crafted quite beautifully. We love the simple elegance and the respect for tradition that is shown in this stunning medium size piece! White clay, although never truly white in Mata Ortiz, is our absolute favorite! It is also the hardest clay to work with. Jesus Hernandez hand forms his pots without the use of a potter's wheel, from clay that has been dug from the surrounding countryside and strained to remove the impurities. As such, the clay is the purest and easiest to work with, so say the artists from Mata Ortiz. The pot is polished with an agate stone to achieve a beautiful shine, before being painted. The painting on this piece was done with paint made from natural pigments and minerals by the artists, and applied with handcrafted brushes made of long strands of human hair! A true labor of love! This piece is signed by the artist, and a pottery ring will be included with no additional charge.
