This is a small pot that pays homage to Mexico's iconic Virgen de Guadalupe! A gorgeous work of art! The Virgen de Guadalupe is accented by roses on the sides, and a hand clasped in prayer while clutching a rosary. This pattern is so intricate..and to think that it was painted by hand with a home made paint brush crafted of human hair and then etched in the sgraffito technique to reveal the color of the clay below. This gives the piece a beautiful textural appeal! Javier is self taught and only began to achieve recognition a few years ago! As the town mechanic, Javier took the Mata Ortiz Pottery community by storm when he won one of the very top prizes at the 2013 Concurso, the annual juried art show sponsored by the Mexican government. Then in 2014, Javier took home the Presidential Award at the Mexican National Ceramics Awards in Tlaquepaque, Mexico! Amazing work!! The piece is signed by the artist. Stunning!
