Jaime “Jimmy” Villa Lopez is a young second generation potter from Mata Ortiz, Mexico. He learned the art of Mata Ortiz pottery from his father Jose Villa Ortiz and his mother Mary Cruz Lopez Escalante. Jaime chose the sgraffito style of pottery, in which layers of paint are built up, and then the designs are etched into the pottery. He also uses a carving technique, so that his pieces are always rich in texture and design. His artwork features bold designs of birds and other animals. When asked why he favors designs depicting nature, he stated that this was the style of his father, and that he wanted to carry on the family’s traditions. This is what we love most about the arts in Mexico! Art forms are traditionally passed on within the family, and you will find whole families working together on their art in their home workshops.
Cool and unique sgraffito parrots or macaw birds theme on this one of a kind piece from Jaime Villa! Great nature design. The piece is signed by the artist.
