Humberto Pina is one of the cool young guys of Mata Ortiz who is creating exceptionally well done pottery in an affordable range of prices. His talent is enormous. As a young artist and a great person, we love selling Humberto's work.. and it never stays in stock for long! We have been drawn to Humberto's work since we very first started coming to Mata Ortiz. His animal, bird and reptile designs are outstanding!
This pot is done in a fantastic roadrunner design using the sgraffito technique. In Spanish the name for the road runner is correcaminos, and you can actually see them in the area surrounding the village. Sgraffito is the technique where layers of paint are built up, and then the surface is etched to reveal the color of the actual clay below. The piece is hand made without the use of a potter's wheel, polished with an agate stone, and painted with long strands of human hair. The pot is signed by the artist, and a pottery display ring will be included at no extra charge.
