Guadalupe is another fantastic hidden talent in Mata Ortiz, Mexico! And we just love discovering new artists! Guadalupe is the wife of Efrain Mora, who grew up surrounded by his well known family's pottery. Guadalupe and Efren actually work on all of their pieces together, but only Guadalupe signs the pieces. It is nice to see a husband and artist giving all the credit to his wife! These artists favor work in the sgraffito style, where layers of painted are built up and then the designs are etched to reveal the clay color below. And they are highly skilled at this technique, accomplishing a fresh, clean and modern take on the nature designs that you will not see everywhere that you look. True artists in that their style is unique and readily identifiable, which is so refreshing! The couple favor the use of beautiful bird patterns and use a gorgeous combination of colors to achieve their designs. We were delighted when we saw their work that features the stunning Quetzal birds that we see in our travels to Costa Rica! The Quetzal is one of the most beautiful birds around, and this pot does the beauty justice! We are over the moon in love with this result in a wonderful medium to large size!! Definitely museum quality from these rising stars! The piece is signed by Guadalupe Melendez.
