Sad news in the world of Mata Ortiz pottery was that of Gerardo Ledezma's passing just before New Years 2020. He fell ill on 12/24/19 and was taken to the hospital, but they were unable to save his life. It was a huge loss to the family of potters that forms Mata Ortiz, Mexico. But his spirit will live on forever in his beautifully crafted work!
Gerardo Ledezma is from the very well known Ledezma Family and lives in the Barrio Americano section of the village of Mata Ortiz. He is featured in the famous book The Many Faces of Mata Ortiz. Gerardo is well known for his geometric patterns, like this one in black and red, and then accented with a turtle design. Like many in his family, Gerardo favors forming his pots with white clay, and does expertly formed and thin walled pots painted in the traditional style with long strands of human hair. Great pottery at a great price, and always reliable for great quality! We just love these lidded pots, where Gerardo even adds a lovely design on the bottom side of the lid. There is attention to detail on every surface of this piece! The pot is signed by the artist. A pottery display ring will be provided at no additional cost.
