David Bejarano is one of the young potters of Mata Ortiz who is just starting to make a name for himself. He favors the sgraffito technique, where layers of paint are built up and then the design is etched in to reveal the color of the clay below. David hand forms his pots without the use of a potter's wheel, from clay that has been dug from the surrounding countryside and strained to remove the impurities. As such, the clay is one of the purest and easiest to work with.
We loved this medium size egg shaped pot, from the moment that we saw it! The texture and visual appeal with the deep carving and the sgraffito etching in the painted design lend this piece such great appeal. But the design itself is very well thought out. The design represents a desert nature scene that includes big horn ram, deer, javelina, birds and cactus. Such a beautiful piece! The pot is signed by the artist, and a pottery ring is provided for free with your purchase.
