Exciting third generation work from the famous Aguilar Family of Ocotlan, Oaxaca, Mexico! Josefina Aguilar, as well as her three sisters, learned this craft from her mother, the world renowned Isaura Aguilar. Now as Josefina has unfortunately lost her eyesight, her daughter Leticia Garcia Aguilar is taking over the lead role in preserving the traditions of her mother, and her grandmother before her. Leticia has won numerous awards for her work, and is looked at within the family as the new torch bearer of these important traditions.
This particular figurine is one of the Aguilars' best Frida Kahlo interpretations... an interpretation of Frida Kahlo's famous painting from 1943 entitled Self Portrait with Monkeys. Frida is wearing the traditional dress that she favored, and is portrayed surrounded by four monkeys among leaves and birds of paradise flowers. One of my favorites!
