Josefina Aquilar is one of the masters of Mexican Folk Art. Her work is widely collected, and she has won numerous awards for her pottery. The tradition stems from her mother, Isaura Aguilar, who created clay figurines of typical scenes that she would see in her local market in Ocotlan, Oaxaca, Mexico. Today Josefina, along with all three of her sisters and their respective children, carry on the folk art tradition that was started by their mother in beautiful fashion. The Aguilar Sisters are well known for their market scenes, but have also expanded to more modernized themes such as Frida Khalo, Dia de los Muertos and Ladies of the Night. Unfortunately Josefina has gone blind, but still proudly crafts a limited amount of pottery with the assistance of her daughter Leticia. This figurine is masterfully sculpted to form a Market Woman selling a wonderful variety of Oaxacan Wood Carvings, with a Gila Monster alebrije on the top of her head and holding an iguana and an owl. What a fun and unique piece! A perfect addition to your collection. The piece is signed by the artist.
