We are so excited to now be carrying Gorky Gonzalez' line of beautiful and high quality Majolica pottery! Gorky Gonzalez Quinones is an amazing world class artist who won the top prize possible for an artist in Mexico in 1991, the Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes (National Award in Sciences and Arts). He was awarded this top prize for his amazing contribution to Mexico and the world, that of reviving the lost art techniques of Maiolica (Mayolica) that were brought over to Mexico from Spain. Gorky Gonzalez has won so many awards that we can't even begin to cover them, but need to mention that he was also awarded the Premio 150 Grandes Maestros del Arte Popular Mexicano in 1996, where the top 150 amazing artists in the entire country of Mexico were chosen for their work in the field of folk art across all mediums! This is definitely a man after our own heart! His contribution to the world in reviving a beautiful tradition that was almost lost in time is just incredible, and we are so thankful. I love his adorable animal designs, and this cute frog covered sugar bowl is no exception! This piece was hand painted by the talented artists under Gorky's tutelage in his workshop in Guanajuato, Mexico. Done in the Maiolica techniques brought to Mexico by the Spanish and then later revived by Gorky Gonzalez himself. Lead free pottery and dishwasher safe (not recommended for the microwave or stove top). This piece has the artist's readily identifiable pottery mark on the bottom. The AT portion of the mark refers to the fact that this is traditional pottery (or Alfaria Tradicional). Be sure to check out the matching creamer, salt and pepper shakers and the large Frog Pitcher! An amazing set!
