We are so excited to now be carrying Gorky Gonzalez' line of beautiful and high quality Majolica pottery! Gorky Gonzalez Quinones is an amazing world class artist who won the top prize possible for an artist in Mexico in 1991, the Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes (National Award in Sciences and Arts). He was awarded this top prize for his amazing contribution to Mexico and the world, that of reviving the lost art techniques of Maiolica (Mayolica) that were brought over to Mexico from Spain. Gorky Gonzalez has won so many awards that we can't even begin to cover them, but need to mention that he was also awarded the Premio 150 Grandes Maestros del Arte Popular Mexicano in 1996, where the top 150 amazing artists in the entire country of Mexico were chosen for their work in the field of folk art across all mediums! This is definitely a man after our own heart! His contribution to the world in reviving a beautiful tradition that was almost lost in time is just incredible, and we are so thankful. This adorable elephant bank has that great sense of whimsy that we love in folk art! So darn cute! Full of color and charm and interest! This piece was hand painted by the talented artists under Gorky's tutelage in his workshop in Guanajuato, Mexico. Done in the Maiolica techniques brought to Mexico by the Spanish and then later revived by Gorky Gonzalez himself. This piece has the artist's readily identifiable pottery mark on the bottom. The AT portion of the mark refers to the fact that this is traditional pottery (or Alfaria Tradicional).
