  1. Mata Ortiz Pottery Mirna Hernandez Lipped White Clay Pot With Geometrics
    $60.00
Although recently separated, Mirna Hernandez was the very talented wife of Tavo Silveira, who took the top prize (Galardon - Best in Show!) in the 2012 and 2018 pottery competition sponsored by the government in Mata Ortiz, and has won a prize in almost every competition around. Mirna works side by side with Tavo, helping him craft his famous work. Most pieces are signed by both artists as a result. But Mirna Hernandez is a talent that can very much stand on her own. She has won several awards for her work, and is a truly talented second generation artist. Her painting technique is incredible and she has a great eye for symmetry and all the fine details, while still being painted by home made paint brushes crafted of long strands of human hair.. I really enjoy the graphic nature of this piece. Truly eye catching! And the pot itself is so lightweight! This is the ultimate sign of quality in a Mata Ortiz pot. This version of Mirna's signature geometric patterns on white clay has a tall lip, and it is signed by the artist. Learn More
  2. Mata Ortiz Pottery Roberto Olivas White Clay Carved Pot With Mauve Black And Red Stylized Serpent Paint Designs
    $89.00
Roberto Olivas is only in his 30's, but quite gifted at working with clay. He is married to Yadira Silveira, and as such he is also the brother in law of the famous Lila Silveira. He learned the art of carving out designs in pottery from Tavo Silveira, and he does a magnificent job in the carving and the painting of his pottery. Roberto Olivas has been making pottery for about 15 years now, and won first place in the Mata Ortiz Concurso (juried award show) in 2007. More recently in 2015 Roberto took home the second prize in his category. The pot is extremely well done... just gorgeous! And so light weight (another sign of high quality). A beautiful white clay color, combined with red and black painted designs... very unusual and simply stunning with the combination of the intricately carved and painted designs. This is one of our personal favorites from Roberto, the white clay with carved designs! Really well executed and balanced design! This piece is signed by the artist. A pottery display ring will be included with your purchase at no extra cost. Learn More
  3. Mata Ortiz Pottery Lazaro Ozuna Medium Sculpted White Clay With Black And Red Painted And Carved
    $120.00
Lazaro Ozuna is another well known potter in the village. He is popular for the quality and intricacy of his pots. Lazaro learned the art of hand building Mata Ortiz pottery from his cousin Tavo Silveira, and you can readily see Tavo's influence on Lazaro's work. They both favor the use of both painting and carving out large areas of design on the surface of thin walled pots. Lazaro hand forms his pots without the use of a potter's wheel, from clay that has been dug from the surrounding countryside and strained to remove the impurities. As such, the clay is the purest and easiest to work with, so say the artists from Mata Ortiz. The painting on this piece was done with paint made from natural pigments and minerals by the artists, and applied with handcrafted brushes made of long strands of human hair! The pot is polished with an agate stone to achieve a beautiful shine. We loved this beautiful medium pot with it's sculpted top, from the moment that we saw it! The combination of the white clay with the grey paint that has a hint of a purple tone and the earthy reddish brown and black traditional designs lend a wonderful modern appeal to the piece. The areas of the design that have been carved out lend a fantastic textural appeal to the pot as well. We love this unusual piece. The pot is signed by the artist, and a pottery ring is provided for free with you purchase. Learn More

    $120.00
Ernesto Ramirez is another well known potter in the village. He is popular for the quality and intricacy of his pots. His designs feature the difficult to achieve cuadricula squares that are distributed evenly across the surface of his pots. Ernesto hand forms his pots without the use of a potter's wheel, from clay that has been dug from the surrounding countryside and strained to remove the impurities. As such, the clay is the purest and easiest to work with, so say the artists from Mata Ortiz. The painting on this piece was done with handcrafted brushes made of long strands of human hair! The pot is polished with an agate stone to achieve a beautiful shine. I love how true to the artist's signature style this pot is, yet it has very modern appeal with the gorgeous egg shape form! The combination of the natural earthy red almost brown paint with the natural white paint is stunning on the highly polished black surface of this piece. The traditional cuadricula squares design that is arranged in the signature pattern style of Ernesto Ramirez, lends a wonderful modern appeal to the piece. 9. Mata Ortiz Pottery Yaneth Sandoval Small Speckled Sgraffito Lizards Pot
    $30.00
Yaneth Sandoval is a young potter who is already crafting quality pottery! Yaneth only recently began creating Mata Ortiz pottery, after marrying Armando Silveira Jr, the son of Tomasa Mora and her husband Armando Silveira. Tomas and Armando are two fantastic potters who craft every stage of their pottery from the hand building without the use of a potter's wheel, to the burnishing of the pottery by hand polishing it with an agate stone that achieve a brilliant natural shine, the making of the paints from natural pigments and minerals and the painting of the designs with long strands of human hair, all the way to the traditional firing of their pieces on the ground in their backyard. Yaneth grew up in the city of Cuidad Juarez, but having family in Mata Ortiz, traveled to Mata Ortiz often. She found great teachers in both her husband and her in laws, and was inspired to start creating her own unique nature inspired sgraffito pots. This small pot features a lizard design. It is done in the sgraffito technique where layers of paint are built up, and then etched to reveal the color of the actual clay below. But this pice was first covered with a multi colored speckled paint design, to add some extra visual appeal. This pot is signed by the artist, and a pottery ring is always included at no additional charge, but not really necessary in this case. Learn More
  10. Mata Ortiz Pottery Lila Silveira Large Matte Black Clay Pot With Stairway Sculpted Lip
    $360.00
Lila Silveira is one of the finest potters in the village of Mata Ortiz... and one of our true favorites!! Lila was one of the few lucky ones to have been selected to study under Juan Quezada for several years. As a result of the bond that developed, Juan still shares his clay and even his very special gold paint with Lila. Lila is outstanding in her own right... she makes very thin walled and extremely smooth pottery ollas. Her painting is done in traditional patterns, with precision and attention to detail. Definitely museum quality. You won't find her listed in the famous book The Many Faces of Mata Ortiz, as she and her former husband Carlos Carrillo were away from the village on their honeymoon. An interesting twist of fate in itself! We are proud to call Lila our close friend, and proud to share her work!! An amazing talent and an amazing woman!! Lila was selected as one of the top 20 potters in Mata Ortiz, to participate in an exhibit that traveled to Limoges and Paris, France. A few years back the Governor of Chihuahua hosted all of the Governors from the different states in Mexico. He selected one artist from the entire state in order to represent the beauty of Chihuahua, and Lila was selected to create a special pottery piece for every Governor. She has been featured recently on the cover of a magazine and in international documentaries. She is flourishing, yet her devotion to Mata Ortiz pottery remains the same. We really love the elegant and unusual form of this gorgeous pot. The matte black clay is earthy and takes on an almost chocolate brown color. It is adorned with Lila's precise traditional designs in a thin layer of white paint that is one of the most difficult paints to work with (and usually end up thick and messy), and then accented with a smaller amount of a gorgeous natural red paint. We love this for how this pot stands out in a crowd! Painted with long strands of human hair with a home made paint brush and fired traditionally on the ground, it is elegantly done in Lila's signature style. The pot is signed by the artist. A pottery display ring will be included at no extra cost. Learn More
