  1. Oaxacan Wood Carving Saul And Alma Aragon One Piece Roadrunner
    $210.00
A fantastic road runner wood carving by Saul Aragon and his wife Alma Arreola. I love the details in the pops of bright color against the earthy base color, the metallic silver beak, the textural indentations on the edge of the wings and in the beautiful tail feathers, the carved deep set eyes, and the beautiful ridged crown of feathers. The paint design honors traditional Zapotec Indian symbolism, and is painted in fine detail throughout the piece. We met this wonderfully talented couple on one of our last trips to Oaxaca, and we are so excited to carry their spectacular wood carvings! Saul and Alma are from Arrazola, a beautiful town just outside of Oaxaca City, and the village that many would call the birthplace of the Oaxacan Wood Carvings. Arrazola is located close to the famous ruins of Monte Alban and the newly opened ruins at Atzompa. The area is rich in history and tradition, and you can readily see the traditional patterns displayed prominently in the designs of Saul and Alma. The family has been carving these fantastic pieces since the 1980's, and their expertise really shows. Although paying homage to the traditions of the past, Saul and Alma are always looking towards the future as well. Saul is the President of the EcoAlebrijes Association, a cooperative of fifteen families from Arrazola that are committed to respecting the natural resources used in their work, and protecting the future of the copal trees from which the carvers craft these fantastic creatures that we all love so much. We especially love their reforestation projects! This piece was signed by the artists, and there are no removable parts. Learn More

His animal, bird and reptile designs are outstanding! In Spanish the name for the road runner is correcaminos, and you can actually see them in the area surrounding the village. This seed pot features the mighty roadrunners at play across the surface of the piece. Perched at the top of the mountains, with sweeping views of the surrounding canyons and distant pueblos, San Pedro Cajonos kisses the clouds and shines in its art forms. One of the most famous of San Pedro Cajonos artists, is the Blas Family of wood carvers. There style is so unique, and can be identified readily upon sight. Bright colors, and fine painting are their hallmarks. Medardo Jr. is the young son of the well known master carver Medardo Blas, who unfortunately died several years ago from a brain tumor. 7. Oaxacan Wood Carving Mario Castellanos Large Roadrunner
    $495.00
So unusual and just plain cool! The carving itself is spectacular and the color combinations are outstanding! I just love everything about this Meerkat! Mario Castellanos is one of the most tremendously talented wood carvers out there! His work is just incredible, filled with intricate movement and character. He is able to carve figures that very few would even try. His beginning claim to fame was his lizards and iguanas, all carved out of one single piece of copal wood, and with the amazing coiled tails that many other artists have tried to copy. But modern day has seen him expand his talents to a wide variety of animal figures, all with an incredible level of detail and precision! We are so proud to carry his work! Mario is a true artistic genius, whose work is full of whimsy and creativity. His work truly is a level above the rest! Roadrunner woodcarvings are a relatively new carving subject for Mario, and we love the finished product! Just so darn cool, with many little hidden details like the gold metallic face on the roadrunner. There is such a lovely sense of motion in the twisted position of the head, the long upright tail and the spindly legs. yet it is crafted of one solid piece of copal wood! The beautiful flow and balance of the patterns included in the lovely paint job by Mario's wife Reina, using patterns that are traditional to their Zapotec Indian heritage. Every single detail is perfection. There are no removable parts, and the Roadrunner was signed by the artists. Mario's work is so gorgeous and so purely sculptural that he was selected by the Marshall M Fredericks Sculpture Museum as one of only eight artists from Oaxaca, across various sculptural art mediums, to be featured in an exhibit in June of 2017. The exhibit proved so popular that it continued on at Wayne State University. Mario Castellanos was selected by both locations to attend and demonstrate his carving techniques. Mario and his wife Reina have also been featured at museums in California and Arizona. Learn More

  9. Oaxacan Wood Carving Eleazar Morales Road Runner
    $185.00
I just love this awesome road runner Oaxacan wood carving! Eleazar Morales has already achieved the status of a master in wood carving... his true genius of talent is just awe inspiring. Although his brother is the very well known and highly collected Susano Morales, Eleazar's work is quite distinctive. He began carving at the young age of 14, and furthered his artistic development by studying the work of his world famous neighbor Manuel Jimenez. When Manuel Jimenez would discard a woodcarving that did not suite him, Eleazar would study the scraps left behind to further his knowledge of the art of wood carving. Eleazar has certainly come a long way from such a humble beginning, and now his work is shown in galleries around the world. His work is very fine in both the carving detail and the incredible realistic painting done with a very steady and precise hand. We just love the sense of movement in much of his work, and how the painting really reflects the nature of the animal.. such as in this beautiful road runner. The feather detail is simply amazing, and I love the long spindly legs! Eleazar Morales is one of our personal favorites, and we are so excited to be able to share his work with you! This road runner would make an exciting addition to your collection! Grab it while you can, as Eleazar's work tends to sell out quickly. The piece was signed by the artist, and there are no removable parts. Learn More
